The Bachelor of General Studies degree with a focus in Sports and Society provides a basis for understanding the sports industry and the broader economic, political, religious, cultural, ethnic and social systems that apply to the world of sports.

This knowledge of these systems as they apply to the sports industry forms a solid foundation for a variety of careers. Sports and Society graduates could work in retail, research, communication, public relations or marketing fields in positions including administration, management, public relations, and program and event coordination. This focus theme is also good preparation for work and further studies in business management, business administration, economics and marketing.

  • NSC 315: Sports Nutrition - Practical application and span of basic physiology as it applies to nutrition and sport, nutrient utilization, body composition, and application of nutrition for different sports in training and competition. This course will look at strategies for optimal performance in endurance, court and power sports.
  • MKTG 355: Sports Marketing Management - Marketing concepts and strategies unique to organizations in the sports industry with a focus on the management of various marketing activities and creation of marketing plans for sports teams.
  • TLS 356: Sport, Adolescents and Schools - This course provokes critical thought around sports in school settings. Using school sport as a social context, students explore group and individual identity formation, the promulgation of political ideologies and institutions, societal norms, and the development of ethical values.
  • MGMT 357: The Lifecycle of Elite Athletes / Life During and After Sports - Discussion of management principles in sports organizations and how to navigate the life cycle of elite athletes.
